According to an analysis done by Eurostat, Northern Portugal remains one of the poorest regions in the European Union. At the end of 2014, the North had a per capita wealth of 13,900 - 35% less than the European average. However, when it comes to Lisbon, this is not the case. The Portuguese capital is the only region with a per capita wealth exceeding the European average (22,800 euros per capita). The Algarve is the second richest region in Portugal (16,600 euros) followed by Madeira, Açores, Alentejo and the Central Region.

There’s no doubt that inequality is a serious problem in Portugal. Even with efforts to tax the rich, their fortunes keep growing exponentially. Here are the top 10 richest people in Portugal.
